South West ASA Open Water

The Club had a successful weekend at the Open Water Championships held at Greenhill over the weekend.

Kate Mason, Julia Aston, Linda Ashmore and Nick Ireland did the full menu of 10k, 5k and 3k whilst Rachel Reed did the 10k, Mickey Jones did the 3k and James Parkin the 1.5k.

The weather for the 10k on Saturday wasn't great with a strong SW breeze making the swims towards the Pavilion on the 5 laps particularly unpleasant. Kate and Nick won their age groups whilst Rachel, Linda and Julia fell foul of the 3.5 hour cut-off time (as did many others); I suspect there will be some future debate over this time limit which should really have been at least 4 hours.

The 5k was held in sunny conditions and light, but increasing winds on Sunday morning and we all did well. By the afternoon the wind speed had gone up considerably and the combined 3k/1.5k races had a choppy sea to contend with.

I'll post the full results of our team here once I've got them all and put up some pictures from the event.
