Dear All

Just to advise that there is a small amount of development funding available for any Dorset Master who is attending a Masters training course, camp or stroke clinic (pool / open water / tri-athlon).

There is a total of £250 available in £50 bursaries.

If you would like to access funding please could you contact me for an application form, and provide details of the course/camp you are attending.

Masters Championships

Quick reminder that you have one month before the closing date of Masters County Champs 2011 to submit your entries.

Closing date is midday Saturday 5 March 2011.

Please note that due to the very high cost of pool hire this year and the pool provider's requirement of two weeks notice of cancellation to avoid penalties, we will need to review very quickly after the closing date whether this event is financially viable or not. Therefore:

* The closing date cannot be extended as in previous years

* A decision will be taken on Monday 7 March as to whether the event is financially viable

* 260 individual entries are required to break-even on this event - I currently have 29

Last year we had 240 entries, but that was only achieved by extending the closing date twice. So - PLEASE - if you don't want to lose this competition and would like to enter, do that sooner rather than later.

Just been informed by Dorset ASA that the closing date for the Long Distace Championships is the 5th February, not 5th January.

There are 24 places left for this event and entry is first come, first served.

Dorset County ASA Masters 2011

The two dates for these have been announced.

The 800m/1500m is at Littledown on Saturday 26th February (5:30pm warm up). Entries are limited to four heats and on a first come / first served basis. Closing date is 5th January 2011 but get thoses entries in ASAP!

The main sessions are at Rossmore on Sunday 27th March with a 12:30pm warm-up. Closing date for this is 5th March 2011.

Inter Counties

The National Inter-County Masters Competition will this year be held at Oxley Sports Centre in Sherborne on Sunday 21 November 2010.

Warm-up will be at 1.30pm (to be confirmed).

Roger Guttridge will be selecting the Dorset team and will be in touch closer to the time.

Seahorse Swim 2010

Weyport Masters had three representatives at the inaugural SeaHorse Swim last Sunday.

Kate Mason, Linda Ashmore and Nick Ireland were entered in the non-wetsuit category (naturally) and swam the 3.8 km (2.4 mile) course in times of 1:10:05, 1:19:46 and 1:08:12 respectively.

Kate was presented with the Roy Harding Memorial trophy as the first female non-wetsuit swimmer over 40 to finish.

Weymouth swimming pool open

Temporary boilers have been installed and are now operational so both the main and small pools are open as of today.

Our next training session there is Wednesday evening.

Alternative Swim Sessions

Whilst Weymouth swimming pool is closed, avail yourself of the Masters sessions held by West Dorset Warriors.

They are 8:30pm to 10pm on Monday and Thursday nights at the Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre in Dorchester.

Coach is Dave Hewitt and the cost is £3.40 payable to the front desk - you don't have to be a member of Warriors to take part.

Weymouth swimming pool closed

Both pools have closed due to a serious boiler failure.

There is no indication of when it may reopen; rumour is that the boiler requires replacement and that may take weeks.

Both the Weymouth Council site and that of SLM (who manage the pool) have similar notices about the closure; click on the links to get updated information.

Masters Swimsuit Rules

Whilst there were rumours that the swimsuits rules that apply from January 1st 2010 would be relaxed for Masters events, it has been announced that that will not be the case.

In summary, you can only wear one costume, it must be of textile fabric and you can't have zips etc. For men, the legal suit coverage is above the knee and below the navel. For women, above the knee and below the neck, not covering arms or shoulders.

These rules will be applied at the upcoming Dorset 1500/800m races.

Dorset ASA Long Distance Championships

Valentine Gala Cancelled

This year's Valentine Gala to be held on February 7th at Osprey Leisure Centre has regretfully been cancelled due to the lack of entries, possibly related to the recent spell of bad weather.

All entry fees will be returned in due course.

The gala will be run next year and Weyport Masters SC hopes it can count on your continued support.

XMAS Day Swim

Kevin recently trained with us and competed in the Hyde Park Paratriathlon a couple of weeks back.

He was 1st Brit out of the water, 3rd Brit across the line and 1st Brit in his classification, but unfortunately was out of the medals finishing in 6th place overall.

ASA South West Open Water 2009

This year's events went ahead in hot weather, 16 degree water and a strongish wind which made the swims slightly uncomfortable.

We had two swimmers in Saturday's 10km event - Linda Ashmore & Nick Ireland.

Both finished ahead of the cut-off time of four hours and won the Western Counties and Dorset ASA Cups.

Kate Mason swam the 5km on Sunday morning and came away with a shield and gold medal.

Bob Roberts took part in the 1.5km event in the afternoon; the results aren't on the ASA web site so I don't yet know how he did.

ASW South West Open Water

This weekend sees the annual open water championships off Greenhill, Weymouth.

The 10km race kicks off at 1pm on Saturday with the 5km on Sunday morning and the combined 3km/1.5km on Sunday afternoon.

Hopefully the weather will be OK this year and it won't get cancelled.

The closing date for entries for the 2009 Dorset Masters Championships has been extended to Saturday 28 February, so if you haven't managed to get your entries to me, there is still time.

And if you have lost the entry form or are having problems downloading it, you can phone me on 01425 673512 or email me with your events/times - but please remember to give your DoB and postal address so I can confirm entries.

Also, if you want to enter an event for which you do not have a time, please submit a time or guesstimate for another distance in the same stroke if possible, and I will work out a reasonable time from that.

Entries this year are up nearly 30% on last year which will make for a much better competition - and should give you a bit more of a breather between events!

Pool Fees 2009

Due to several increases in pool charges, pool fees will increase for the first time since 2005 from the 1st January 2009.

Per session fees will increase by 50p to £3.50.

The Wednesday night 10 week option will now be £25.

Both still represent good value I think you'll agree.

Membership Fees Due

Membership fees of £30 for competitive and £25 for non-competitive swimmers are now due.

These are the same cost as last year.

Note that because of insurance issues, these must be paid by 20th December else you won't be allowed to swim after this date.

Biathle World Champion!

Last Saturday saw the 10th annual Biathle World Championships which this year were held in Cape Town, South Africa.

Our club had three members competing and they all came away with a medal.

Ian Hughes hit the front in the Masters B category from the start and maintained that position through both runs and the swim. He held on to take the gold medal from a closing South African athlete.

Carole Smith had tough competition in the her Masters B race and found it difficult to stay with another of the strong host team but managed to win a strong silver medal, easily beating the bronze medalist.

Nick Ireland was down the field after the first run but came out of the swim in fourth position and then had a shoulder to shoulder race over the last 1km for the 3rd/4th places, finally taking the bronze medal on the line.

Valentine Gala 2009

The weather took it's toll on the ASA South West Open Water Championships at Greenhill, Weymouth.

I managed to race in the ILDSA organised Clew Bay 10k over in County Mayo, Eire on Saturday. An excellent swim from Inishshoo island out in the bay back to the quay at Newport.

Aquathons

For those of us who run as well as swim, there are numerous aquathons running this summer both in Weymouth and also Bournemouth.

There are three in Bournemouth on Wednesday evenings starting at 7pm - 25th June, 23rd July & 20th August. These races have a short or long option - short is a 400m swim and 4k run. Long is double these distances. Entry details can be found at http://www.conceptsport.co.uk/.

There are also seven aquathons being run at Bowleaze Cove - the first six are qualifiers for the final on Sunday 24th August. The first six are on Wednesday nights every week from the 9th July. Distances vary with each race but are some combination of either a 400m or 800m swim and a 5k or 10k run. Entry details for these are at http://www.bustinskin.com/.

There is a monitoring buoy out in the bay which provides information on wave height and sea temperature amongst other things.

Exmouth Fairway Buoy Swim 2008

This year's swim is on Sunday 1st June; the entry form is available under Events -> Open Water.

We normally send a strong team to this race and it's a good warm up for the South West ASA Championships in July at Greenhill.

The closing date is Monday 26th May but it is advisable to enter well before then - they were oversubscribed last year and I believe there's a limit of 40 entrants this year.

The Royal Navy Gala at Yeovilton (on Sunday 6th April this year) is usually well attended by our club and as a bonus includes 400m and 200m f/s events, ideal if you plan on competing in the South West ASA races over these distances two weeks later at Millfield on the 20th April.

ASA South West Open Water 2008

The usual open water races will be held on the 5th & 6th July 2008 at Greenhill, Weymouth.

Inter-County Result

At yesterday's ASA South West Inter-County Masters meet, Dorset came third behind winners Devon and second placed Wiltshire.

We were second last year; quite a few first choice swimmers were unavailable either through other commitments or injury yesterday.

Next year's event is to be held on Sunday 16th November, venue to be decided.

Valentine Gala 2008

The Valentine Gala is being held on Sunday 3rd February 2008 at Weymouth swimming pool.

Dorset County ASA Masters Championships

For the past few years the DCASA Masters Championship was held as part of our own Valentine Gala. They were last run as a standalone event in their own right back in 1998.

For 2008 it has been decided that they will run again over two galas. Initial details are shown below - more information will be posted when I have it.

Proposed dates and venues are as follows:

Sunday 24 February - Bridport (Warm-up 1pm for 1.30pm start, cards by 12.30pm)
Sunday 9 March - Rossmore (Warm-up 1pm for 1.30pm start, cards by 12.30pm)

Proposed programme of events:

All 50m, 100m and 200m events plus 400m freestyle and single sex/mixed freestyle and medley relays for 120 yrs and 180 yrs age groups.

Christmas Social

Poole Masters Gala on Saturday

Hopefully the event will remain at Rossmore and not get moved at the last minute to the Dolphin Pool like last year!

AGM

The Weyport Masters AGM will be held at Kate's house on Buxton Road at 7pm (ish) on Sunday 14th October.

The nomination sheet for the various posts is up on the notice board at Osprey Leisure Centre (note the board has recently moved down the corridor towards the sports hall to make way for the new vending machines).

Sprint Triathlon Victory for Carole

Carole Smith won her age group (50 - 54) at the recent Sprint Triathlon World Championships in Hamburg and hence is now a World Champion! Ian Hughes managed a top ten finish in his age group (45 - 49) against very tough opposition.

With Linda Ashmore's recent world record solo channel swim, it's been an exciting year so far for the club.
